The Risa relative in USA

Chapt. 7. The families in USA coming directly from the Risa 3 (Anderson) farm.

Kornelius Anderson in Roland Iowa from 1854. (First generation).

Most of the information her is written down by Agnes Anderson Haagenson in 1977.

Cornelious, b. 19.5.1833, d. 1902, m. 1865 Inger Marie Larsdtr. Bru, b. 1838, d.1903.

Cornelius traveled along with several young men from Rennesøy and Mosterøy.

Among them was his future brother-in-law, Reiar Bru (Richard Larsson in USA), b.

1830, at the farm Finnasand 2, but from about 1840 living at the farm Bru. Inger Marie

came to USA in 1864 and settled down at her brother's, Richard Larsson, place in

Ottawa, IL. Richard married and got a large family, and became a prosperous and

prominent farmer in that area (Fox River, where Cleng Person's group settled down in 1836).

In 1866 Cornelius and Inger purchased a farm, three miles west of Roland. At that

time they were among the earliest pioneers in that area. Here they lived all their life.

They are both buried near the entrance of Roland Cemetery, see below.

Half of the people in this area and Forest City are from Norwegian heritage. They had services in Norwegian for many years, up to 1980.

Andrew Lauritz, b. 28.1.1867, d. 1936, m. 1895 Betsy (Britta) Hegland, b. 1876,

d. 1941.

Betsy was born at the Hegland “farm” in Skaanevik, Norway (Furdal farm on

her mother side). They did not own the “farm”, so the Hegland Family went to

USA in 1894, with Betsy and 4 more children, and settled down in Roland

where Betsy, 3 aunts, Jorena (Mrs. Hans Olson), Mrs. Guro Hegland and Mrs.

Britta Hammersland, already lived. Both Betsy parents are buried in the

Roland cemetery, together with 2 brothers, Mikkel (Mike) and Thor, both

farmers, and sister Helen.

Betsy began keeping house for Andrew and then they married. Betsy kept

speaking Norwegian, so Agnes learned Norwegian before English.

Andrew and Betsy purchased a big farm 3 miles west of Roland, and lived

there for 25 years. 11 children were born on that farm. In 1919 they sold the

farm, and moved to a farm they had purchased just north of Woden, IA. (The

reason for this move, according to Richard D. Haagenson, was that he got

angry when Roland was first in state to Tax all land-owners to pay for the

school (consolidate). There he helped set-up two sons on another farm. They

over-extended so when a crash came he was nearly wiped out. He bought land

near Thompson and lived there until he died). Later Betsy lived in Lake Mills.

Both are buried at the Roland cemetery.

Clarence Benjamin, b. 1895, d. 1958. He served in World War I in France

in 1918. Farmer. Lived in Roland and buried there.

Agnes was a teacher, and Orvin was U.S. Mail Carrier, in Leland,

Iowa. Agnes was one of the best basket ball players in Iowa in early

years. When Betta visited them in USA in July 1973, she got lots of

family information. Agnes and Orvin visited Rennesøy and Skaanevik

in 1970 and 1975. She learned the Norwegian language from her

mother. Agnes is buried in Lake Mills.

Carl, b. 1885, d. 1908. At the age of 22 Carl, in company with another young man left

for Edmonton, Canada to purchase land and to make their homes. One year

later he became seriously ill with a ruptured appendix and died. Then his

brother Andrew left for Canada and brought the body back to Roland where he

was buried. Andrew and John kept the farm for ab. 20 years. Later Andrew

sold the farm to his son Marion and his daughter Tillie. Later it was sold to

Tillie’s son Loren Chelleen.

Marta Kristina Anderson in Iowa from 1858. (First generation).

Marta Kristina, b. 19.5.1833. We do not have any information on Marta Kristina's life in the

USA. According to Agnes' notes, she was about 20 years in 1858, and therefore not a

twin of Cornelious (?). She lived near Lamoni, IA. In the Rennesøy book of 1972, she

is not mentioned at all. In the bigger Rennesøy book of 1993, she is twin of Cornelious (?).

Jakob Anderson in Iowa from 1882, and Oregon from 1910. (Second generation).

Jacob Anderson Rise, b. 1859, d. 1925 (City View Cemetery, Salem). He lived first in Forest

City, Iowa where he married Helen Sarah Ronberg (teacher) b. 1874, d. 1968. He

owned a leather goods and harness shop there. In 1910 they moved to Salem, Oregon,

where he had two stores downtown (shoes and leather). The information on Jakob and

his family I (Betta) got from Mrs. Minerva Davis in Roland, daughter of Christ A.

Rise, when I (Betta) visited her in July 1973. Minerva then showed me a letter from

her father's cousin, Bernice M. Rise, written to her on Dec. 14. 1968.

Bernice Marguerite, b. 1896, d. 1972. Not married. Chief Librarian at University of

Oregon in Salem, where she worked for 50 years. She was very well-educated.

Bachelor from University of Oregon in 1923, and Master from Columbia

University in New York in 1928. From 1932 until retirement in 1966 she was a

Professor in the Library School of the University of Oregon at Eugene. She

received many honors and awards. She was particularly interested in

Scandinavian literature. She had been at work on a book about her Viking

ancestors. Bernice had letter contact with her cousin Charlotte Munson, and

also with second cousin Agnes Haagenson, and had collected information from

Risa in Norway. Bernice was nursing Arthur the last years. Address 1968: 135

- 17th Street S.E., Salem, Oregon 97301.

Arthur, b. 1902, d. 1974. Not married. Store business in many years in Salem. Real

Estate broker in 1968.

In the will after Bernice and Arthur, they gave their money and books to the Libraries of Forest City, and the Willamette University of Oregon library. On Internet you may search for "Bernice M Rise Testamentary Trust" (Ab. $ 100.000).

The money left for the Public Library of Forest City is called "Helen and Jacob Rise Memorial" in honor of their parents. The first allotment (only interest) in 1978 was $1.000, the last in 2012 was $ 3.000. The limitation is purchasing only Norwegian and Swedish books. When I visit the library in 2013 (see Chapt. 9.), I could see this "Jacob A Rise Collection of books".

Most of the newly bought books are ordinary County books ("bygdabøker") from different area of Norway, written in Norwegian. I don't think they have many readers in Forest City.

Kristoffer Anderson in Illinois from 1882. (Second generation).

Christopher (Christ/Kristen) Anderson, b. 8.12.1866, d. 1933, m. 1890 Emma Eliason, b.

1871, d. 1960. He got his first job at his uncle, Cornelius Anderson in Roland. He

married in La Salle County. Emma’s mother was born Haagensen. They settled on

“The Anderson farm”(ab. 300 acres), but Christopher bought and sold many farms, see

below. Christopher farmed in the Plano – Newark area, and moved into town when he

retired. Christopher visit Norway in 1906 (2 month) and one more time since.

This auction advertise from the Worsley Farm, dated 01.02.1912, is hanging in Roger Dale's house in Bristol IL. Christ was his grandfather, (and uncle to my grandmother). This farm was lying 3.5 miles East of Newark IL in the Fox River region.

Christina Risa Voga in Illinois from about 1910. (Third generation).

We do not know when Christina emigrated. She first came to Kristoffer Anderson, her father's brother in Illinois. There she married Osmund Våge who was a widower with three children when they married. They lived in Plano, Illinois all their time and got six children. Osman was still living in his home in 1974.

Christ A. Rise in Illinois from 1909. (Third generation).

In the USA he got the name Christ A. Rise. The immigration authorities changed his name when he passed Ellis Island on his way to relatives in Illinois. He first came to his uncle, Kristoffer Anderson outside Plano, Illinois.

Kristen (Christ), b. 26.10.1892, d. 1948, m. 1913 Berdie Mae Thomphson with Norwegian

parents, b.1890, d. 1963. They lived on a farm outside Helmer Illinois, until they

moved to Iowa in 1915. There they bought a farm outside Belmond.

Russel b. 1917, d. 1917. Arlyn and Russel are both buried at the same churchyard as

their parents.

Curtis B. Rise b. 1919, d. 2002, m. 1947 Marguerite Roser from Geudertheim in

France (near Strasbourg in Germany, where Arne Risa was in detention camp

in 1943). Curtis served in France during the World War II. Living in Belmond,

Iowa. In 1978 Curtis was honored by giving name to “Curtis B. Rise

Apartments” in Belmond, see Chapt. 9.

This picture is hanging in the reception of this Leinbach Center in Belmond, as

one of the founders. Curtis had contact with Charlotte and cousin Fern in 1988.

Arne was here in 1973 for some weeks, on a study tour. Nils Kjetil was here in

1995, with phone call to Charlotte, 93 years of age.
